Thanksgiving Parking Announcement

For those attending Thanksgiving at Sandra's home, please be thoughtful of the parking limitations.

Avoid parking in front of the home on the corner completely.   And be sure to the keep sidewalk clear in front of 451 for handicap access.

If you are in doubt of where you have parked, come on in and ask before you get too comfortable.

We are all looking forward to seeing, hearing, and hugging our guests. It is going to be a great time.  Come and go as you need, turkeys are usually ready around 4 PM.  Any questions, please ask.

Happy Thanksgiving!

PS - My apologies if you received this more than once, I sent it to multiple lists.

Whippoorwill Festival - might be of interest to The Garden

Whippoorwill Festival

The Fifth Annual Whippoorwill Festival - Skills for Earth-Friendly Living, near Berea Kentucky begins next week, starting on Thursday, July 9 through Sunday July 12.

www.whippoorwillfest.com

We've got a great lineup of over 85 workshops for this year's festival, including a trip to Susana Lein's magical permaculture farm, Salamander Springs, and a trip to Forest Retreats, the amazing home of Tim Hensley and Jane Post, just down the road from the Whippoorwill Festival site, where a straw bale house is being built.

Craig Caudill, with the Nature Reliance School in Winchester, will be with us again.  Carol Judy, the wonderful mountain root digger from Tennessee - and so many more interesting people will be at Whippoorwill. Rachel Milford with Reclaiming Your Roots in Knoxville, Bluegrass Greensource, Mike D. with the Organic Consumers Association, and Wild Bill with the High Adventure Wilderness School.    Plus live music, a group campfire and dancing every night.

Whippoorwill is a great place to meet new people and make new friends!

We expect a very good crowd for this year's festival - it will probably be the biggest turnout yet for Whippoorwill ... in our five years, we just keep growing. Last year, nearly 500 people attended Whippoorwill.  It is also possible that Whippoorwill may go on hiatus after this year ... so if you have ever wanted to come to Whippoorwill, this would be a great year to do it!

The Red Lick Valley of Madison County, just outside of Berea in central Kentucky, is a stunningly beautiful place.  As you drive up to the festival site, slow down and take some time to drink in the beauty of Kentucky's knobs.

HomeGrown HideAways is our festival site, and it is a lovely spot.  We will be in a deep Appalachian holler, surrounded by lush forests and mountains, and sometimes we hear the call of the Whippoorwill at night.  It's a magical and haunting sound.  HomeGrown HideAways is about 20 minutes outside of Berea, Kentucky.  For those travelling in from out of state, Interstate 75 goes past Berea, so Whippoorwill is not too hard to find.

Whippoorwill strives to be a family friendly festival.  We offer free admission for children 16 and under!  There will be lots of children at the festival and many young families.  We have tried to keep your costs low for families by serving two simple meals (breakfast and dinner) a day and this is included in your ticket price.  Camping and parking is also included.

A 4-day adult pass for the whole festival is only $120 and a 3-day pass is $90.  Prices will be higher at the gate so purchasing tickets online in advance is the way to go.

I think this festival is a bargain for families, with over 85 workshops, plus music and dancing in the evenings.  We have lots of old time Appalachian music this year so the dancing should be lively.  Saturday night is the contra dance.

Tickets can be purchased now at the festival websitewww.whippoorwillfest.com until Tuesday of next week.  The site takes Paypal and Visa etc. and its a simple process.

If you haven't been to the festival before, the best thing is to look at the pictures on the festival website.  You can also read some more about the festival on the Festival Info page

Click here to see the festival schedule - it looks pretty awesome this year.

Extend Solar Tax Benefits

In 2014, the solar industry added jobs at a rate that was 10 times faster than the rest of the economy, fueled in large part by the ITC's important tax benefits for solar producers, both in private homes and for businesses. As more and more people make the switch to clean energy for their homes, solar installation and the industry behind it is benefiting hardworking families, and the planet.

All of that could soon come to a screeching halt. Big Polluters like the Koch Brothers are going to do everything they can to block the extension of crucial tax benefits for the solar industry, which are set to expire Dec. 31, 2016.

Help me save the solar industry! Send a message to Congress today asking them to extend critical solar tax benefits.

Thank you!

Permaculture is about ethical treatment of all Humans as well as Nature

Permaculture includes "the building of stable communities through
harmonious inter-relationships of all humans."
"We will either survive together or none of us will survive. In
Nature we see integrated ecosystems where different elements are all
bound together in mutually beneficial relationships. We have to start
looking at human society the same way. Life should be cooperative
rather then competitive. It is only our choices that make competition a
central part of how we interact with each other."
Competition is cultural and optional!

Meet the Once-Homeless Man Who Revolutionized How We Care for the Homeless

This article was discussed at our Membership Meeting in relation to our on-going homeless project here at the Garden.  It is quite thought provoking.  Are we just going to be a band-aid or are we a cog in a much larger wheel?  I suppose we will find out soon enough.

Another homeless article has me up in arms, and I'm sure it will you also:

Having slept in my car and depended on the goodwill of others throughout my life, I hope we can be more than a little band-aid.  And I pray that everyone who reads this is sleeping well tonight in a warm, safe place, and no tummy rumblings.

Much love to you all.

So, you think you can't get eyeglasses?

Thanks to a neighbor, I have learned of New-Eyes.Org.  On their website, you will find an application you can print and fill out and then take to your family doctor to have them submit the form on your behalf.  If you have no other eye insurance or assistance, this is definitely worth looking into.  And please pass this along to anyone you know who may be in need.

Belated Merry Beltaine!

I am just now returning to the mundane world after an awesome Beltaine experience at the Snyder Farm.  This was an amazing weekend and the full moon was so beautiful.

I hope that each of you had as good a time.  Sadly, my cell phone is casualty of trip. So, I cannot be called or texted until the replacement arrives.  Thankfully, I have insurance.

Since the wheel of the year has moved a bit further and the weather is warming up, I wanted to share with you a few thoughts from Kentucky Utilities about Spring Cleaning:

1.  Remove dust from light bulbs, electronic devices and vents to help them perform at maximum capacity.
2.  Replace old light bulbs with high-efficiency LED or compact fluorescent bulbs.
3.  Take a few extra minutes to vacuum the refrigerator coils.
4.  Install energy-saving showerheads, faucets or flow restrictors.
5.  Plug your televisions, computers and DVD players into a power strip.  That makes it easier to turn them off when you're not using them and back on when you need them.
6.  Flip the switch on ceiling fans so they can circulate counterclockwise.  That helps cut down on air conditioner use.
7.  Seal any air leaks to help prevent cool air from escaping.

Brightest Blessings!

"They" formally used as a gender-neutral pronoun

As you can see, I have been bouncing around the entertainment news this morning. It is one of those things in which I occasionally take guilty pleasure.

Whilst browsing about this morning, I found an article with this editor note:

"This article uses "they" as a gender-neutral, singular pronoun in an effort to respect the young Jolie-Pitt's gender identity, whatever that may end up being."

I thought some of the gardeners would be interested in this based on our Compassionate Language presentation and discussion earlier this year.

Ramblings and Save the Date

Greetings Programs!~

I have been in and out of late with thoughts of "I should post this or share that", but nothing seems to stick.  The funniest of these passing thoughts was to comment on the running of the bull in Lexington this past week when that poor bovine escaped the lab and ran amuk on UK campus.
New Moon Circle had a very nice Ostara ritual and potluck.  Thank you again, Sue, for taking lead on that and doing a fantastic job.  The sacrifice of the chocolate duck was just awesome too!

Something I found today that I wanted to share was the Spring Concert of the EKU Dance Theater.  I have attended this many times in the past and just love it every time.

Merry Ostara!

At 6:45 PM today (Eastern time) we will be at the Vernal Equinox, thus beginning Spring!  Tomorrow is the first full day of Spring and we are expecting some beautiful weather to bring it in right.  Pagans in the Northern Hemisphere will be celebrating Ostara this weekend... And what an incredible start -- the Solar Eclipse this morning with the "supermoon"!

Much to my surprise when wandering across the web and needing to search for something, discovered a link to
It's International Day of Happiness. Join the party for a happy planet.
I found that very amusing.

I was also recently introduced to the concept of keeping a gratitude journal.  The idea is to write down 5 different things each day for thirty days that you are grateful for.  Nothing can be repeated.  So, you end up with 150 items of gratefulness.  That is a challenge.  To pare it down, how about this:  Can you list 5 things you are grateful for today at the beginning of Spring?  If you reply in the comments, make sure that you do not repeat what someone else is thankful for...

Start now!  :-)

Bright Blessings, my friends.

Making Jelly from Fruit Juice

This past Monday, New Moon Circle, a group within the Garden, had a social time with jelly making. Seems we always end up with an abundance of fruit juice from commodities and other sources and needed to find a way to use it up so that no food goes to waste.

We used the half-recipe so as to make all our other ingredients stretch further.

Here are the measurements for the half recipe:

4 cups fruit juice
3 c. sugar
1/4 c. lemon juice
1pkg. powdered pectin

For a full recipe, use these measurements:

1 jar fruit juice (1/2 gal.)
6 c. sugar
1/2 c. lemon juice
2 pkg. powdered pectin

We made several flavors, but note that we did not use the lemon juice in the orange juice jelly.

1. Combine fruit juice, lemon juice and pectin in a large sauce pot. Stir over medium-high heat
until pectin dissolves (about 20 minutes).

2. Mixture will come to a rolling boil. Stir in sugar and return to rolling boil (about 5 minutes).

3. Boil hard 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Skim foam if necessary. (We discovered that some flavors needed to boil longer to start setting up a jell.)

4. Pour hot liquid into sterilized jars, leaving 1/4 inch head space. Adjust caps. Turn upside-down while cooling 5 - 10 minutes.

5. Turn right-side-up to finish cooling and create vacuum in jar.

Full recipe yields about 10 half pints.

More information and inspiration can be found here:
 http://www.pickyourown.org/makejellyfromjuice.htm
and also here:
https://youtu.be/F88Pjnclos4

We have grape, cranberry, apple-cherry, apple-raspberry, orange, and apple-cranberry to sample and I think all of us are excited to try this again very soon!  Steph took some pics while we were stirring, so you may see our jelly making mugs on the intrawebs in the near future. :-)

Much love and hugs to you all. Mahalo!

Did you "Spring Forward"?

My goodness!  I can't believe it has almost been a month since my last blog post.  The weather and being trapped inside without transportation has taken its toll in many ways.  We are glad to announce that my car is fixed and most of the snow has dissipated.  Still feeling some of the winter blues, but fighting the good fight.

Hope you all properly sprang forward one hour on your non-automated clocks and did not miss any important appointments. If you are still feeling snowbound and cabin fever, you are in luck!  This coming Sunday, March 15, we will be having fellowship at the Plantory on 6th Street at 5 PM; potluck as usual.  Love and family will be sharing with us how to make origami seed pots to start our plantings and we will be exchanging seeds if you have any to share or need some.

As always, bring out any coupons you may have for exchange; and we are still taking donations of yarn, fleece, or handcrafted hats, scarves, and mittens for our homeless project.

Many of you may have received an invite in your email for our upcoming Beltaine celebration... if you feel your invite may have gotten lost along the way, please send a note to us with the subject line "Beltaine".

Spring is fast approaching, be sure to take a few moments to witness the miracle all around us. Namaste.

Cardinal in Snow

Welcome to Winter Storm Octavia. This is the first significant snowfall that I can remember in over a decade.

We caught this beautiful cardinal enjoying the seed pattie we hung as he braved the weather.

We hope you all stay safe and warm. Please do not drive unless you absolutely must. Many schools are already closed for tomorrow.

Stay tuned with wishes of warmth and thoughts turning to Beltaine.

Dates, reminders, and a request

First, my apologies if you see this post in multiple places and also for taking so darn long to get this information out of my head and onto the intrawebs!  Life has been challenging of late, as it is known to be for all of us.

Second, some dates to remember and look forward to:

This Sunday, February 15, 3 PM Garden Council Meeting, 5 PM Garden Source Spiritual Center Fellowship and Potluck, both at the Plantory, 501 West Sixth Street, Suite 250, Lexington, KY 40508.  Fellowship topic will be Compassionate Language and Communications within the context of LGBT and transition...  or Compassionate Communications, for short. :-)  Dru will be our guest as we have an open conversation about what is and is not appropriate speech and how to be more thoughtful before placing foot firmly in mouth.  A really appropriate topic for Valentine Weekend in my humble opinion. (BTW, Happy V Day for those who celebrate it.)

Monday, February 23, 2 PM ish (it is ok to arrive earlier), New Moon Circle will be having planning meeting and potluck at Sandra's home.  We will also be having a jelly-making activity!  Bring your jelly jars, sugar, juice, etc.  Sandra has the sure-jell and the know-how. NMC will be planning Beltaine rituals (see below) and future dates to meet for ritual, activities, learning and celebration together.

SAVE THE DATE: Garden Source Spiritual Center in cahoots with New Moon Circle and our ever widening community of family and friends will be celebrating Beltaine for our first time together the weekend of May 1st at the Snyder Farm in Wilmore, KY.  Camping will be Friday and Saturday nights, breakdown on Sunday.  A few rituals will be thrown in and a whole bunch of family-friendly fun.  Being our first time together, we are just pulling from many directions to create our own traditions so that everyone can find joy for the holiday.  More information to come....

Lastly, Eric, Levia, and family have been shined on by fortune and foresight thusly securing a new home that is lease to own!  I am so happy for them, but there is much to relocating a family.  If you have a few hours on a day that you will be in Lexington and you want to help out, please contact Levia directly. (I can provide her info if need be.)  They have paid up rent at both the old and new places thru the end of February, so any time folks can pitch in would be greatly appreciated.

I do hope this message finds everyone well and warm and that I will be able to see many of your smiling faces this Sunday for fellowship.

Brightest Blessings!

(PS - If I have forgotten anything, please send me a note.)

Imbolc is almost here!

The sun grows a little brighter, the earth gets a little warmer, life is quickening in the soil, it is time for Imbolc!  New Moon Circle would like to invite you to join us in celebrating Imbolc (Candlemas) with us at the home of Sandra Sanford.  Mark the date: Sunday, February 1, at 4 PM. There will be potluck, ritual, candle burning, tool blessing, seed planting, and divination.  Bring a friend, but please try to RSVP so that we have an idea of how  many to plan for the main course. Dairy dishes are encouraged to honor the "ewe's milk", Spring is around the corner. (Please make us aware of any food allergies, so that a variety of dishes can be planned in addition to your potluck contribution.) Send RSVP and any questions to newmoonofky-owner@yahoogroups.com and we will pass them to Sandra.  Our apologies for the late announcement and bright blessings to you all.

New Moon Circle is one of the groups under the umbrella of Garden Source Spiritual Center Inc.  Please check us out at GardenSourcsSC.Org and contact us thru the website or at GardenSourceSC@gmail.com for more information about us and our regular fellowships or special events.

Fellowship, 5 PM, Sunday, January 18th - topic change

We will be gathering at the Plantory tomorrow for Fellowship and potluck at 5 PM.

Originally our program was to be a healing ritual led by Sherry, that has been postponed for later in the year.

Instead, we will be viewing a documentary about food insecurity in the United States, a topic that is near to most, if not all, of us.

Because of the length of the film, we will be eating while viewing it, with time for discussion and socialization after.

I look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

If you want to attend the Council meeting before Fellowship, be there by 3 PM.

When did you last change your passwords?

So, I was online last night purchasing a few crafty things to make me smile, then I slept like a baby.

After my appointments this morning, the phone call came... from my bank!

Around 4 AM our time, someone at Forest Park in Paris, France, tried to use my debit card for a purchase exceeding $600.  When I heard that, I was soooo thankful that my bank stays on top of strange purchases and stopped it.  The charge was refused and my debit card was cancelled.  I'll have a replacement card in a few days.

If that had cleared, I would have been in a nightmare of epic proportions.

So, the bank did their job, now I am doing mine.  Slowly but surely changing my passwords online, including the passwords on my computer to even access my profile.  (I use 7, so it has user profiles, your computer may be different.)   As I am accessing each of the programs and websites that I use, I am changing the passwords.  I made sure to start with my bank!

I wanted to share all this so I could ask, "When did you last change your passwords?"

I think, "new year, new passwords" might be words to live by.  I have had some of the same passwords in excess of 7 years or variations on a theme.  And I could have gone on in bliss indefinitely if not for the wake up call from France.

Please take a moment and do an inventory of your security.  If you haven't changed your passwords in the past year, please do.  We all have limited resources, so it is especially bad when some stranger tries to tap into them.

After all your passwords are updated, be sure to stop by our website GardenSourceSC.Org and come out to visit us this Sunday at the Plantory for Fellowship and Potluck at 5 PM!

Welcome to the New Year

My apologies for my New Year post happening on the 5th.  Like many of you, the barrage of holidays was overwhelming, frustrating, joyful, and bittersweet.  And I am so glad it is behind us.  Santa let me know I have been a pretty good kid and I have almost wore out the copy of Labyrinth that was found under the tree.  Rosa made me watch it 5 times in a row... not that I'm complaining, Jareth could kidnap me anyday.

Nonetheless, I wanted to share a couple highlights of this past holiday season, the first for me was epic.  Bruce Campbell of B-movie awesomeness portrayed Santa in Season 1, Episode 4, of The Librarians. Official OMG.  Click here for link if you do not have TNT or any tv, as I do not.  Bruce stole my heart in Evil Dead 2 and has never let go.  No comments from the peanut gallery, please.

The second is the New Years Ball dropping in NYC.  I did not get to see it live since it aired on one of the network channels that my poor-man-soda-can-over-coaxial-cable antenna refuses to pick up consistently.  The version I found shows the NYC mayor and his wife and family at the end.  It wrenched my heart a bit knowing all the turmoil there and around our country.  Thanks to our modern age of the internet, I was able to find the video here and shed a few tears slightly after midnight.

Finally, to finish welcoming in the new year and get things started off on the correct footing, Garden Source will be having a healing ritual as part of our January fellowship, and you are all invited!  We are sticking to our schedule of every third Sunday unless something amazing or startling blows us off course.

So, I do hope to see your smiling faces at 5 PM on Sunday, January 18th, at the Plantory, 501 West Sixth Street, Suite 250, Lexington, KY 40508. Bring a dish to share if you are able, hang around for a bit after fellowship for potluck and social time, and just enjoy yourself.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us thru our website or email.

Celtic blessings to start your year off right:

A blessing upon your home,
A blessing upon your hearth,
A blessing upon your dwelling
And upon your warming fire,
A blessing upon your animals and land,
A blessing upon your kith and kin,
A blessing upon you in lightness or darkness
Each day and night of your life.

May peace and plenty bless your world,
With Joy that long endures,
May all life's passing seasons
Bring the best to you and yours.
