Notes from the council - October

Our gardensourcesc.org website has been migrated to a new host and is up and running.  Let us know if you have any difficulties with it.

We currently have 110 followers on FaceBook!
Homeless hookers is taking donations for the cold season ahead of us.  It also is now hosted at homelesshookers.wordpress.com.

Employment Solutions garden has a few tomatoes left if anyone wants to pick them before the frost.  They have noticed our good work in gardening and animal care and are most pleased.

Recent notice has been given that yahoo groups will disappear soon.  We will archive conversations as needed.

We had a yard sale in September and served food for the Richmond UU Drag queen story hour.  Proceeds have been added to the garden funds.

The Mystic Fair seems to have moved locations.  This means dates of conflict for our meetings should no longer be an issue.

The council discussed a yule/winter fest for December 21st at Employment Solutions.  This has been confirmed possible with ES staff.  A donations jar and meal was discussed as well.  A more formal announcement will be forthcoming.

The next council and fellowship meeting has been moved to November 3rd.

See you soon!
--The Council

Designing No-Work Food Gardens

"Nobody was toiling to maintain this system. Nobody was weeding, or pruning, watering, or fertilising it, except for perhaps the deer. Yet, it seemed nearly as productive as our patch on the farm, and the shade-grown fruit was amazingly juicy and rich."

Plastic Ingestion by People Could Be Equating to a Credit Card a Week

"A new study by the University of Newcastle in Australia has found that in average, people ingest 5 grams of plastic every week, or 2,000 microplastic particles. That's the equivalent of eating a credit card."

Here's The Scientific Reason Doctors Are Prescribing Gardening For Mental Health

Bumblebee Has Officially Been Added To The Ever-Growing List Of Endangered Species

"More than one-third of the plants grown in the United States depend on pollinators, and the population of this bee is drastically reduced due to the destruction of natural resources through monoculture and generous use of pesticides and herbicides on GMO crops. Hence, the opposition to the listing of this bee is counterproductive, since it is indeed an endangered pollinator."

Groupthink – is it a valid argument against climate science?

"For groupthink to develop, Janis argued, several existing conditions needed to be in place. These include group cohesiveness, insularity, and a lack of procedures for the search and appraisal of information. If a group is afflicted by these conditions then there are several tell-tale signs: stereotyped views of rivals and enemies; self-censorship of doubts or counterarguments to create an illusion of unanimity; and direct pressure on any members that express strong arguments against any of the group stereotypes."

Long Live Microbiomes!

"Not only is transforming agriculture to regenerative practices a likely win for our health—and for nature more broadly—it can also be a key climate solution. As we’ve written previously, humanity can sequester carbon and improve nutrition through the regenerative farming of land and sea. This approach can be applied at all scales, including Climate Victory Gardens in yards, local parks, terraces and rooftops."

Getting the word out

The Garden was representing as the food vendor at the Richmond Drag Story Hour today. We got to witness Monarch Butterflies emerge from their chrysalis and enjoyed time meeting more like-minded folks.

What is Sacred?

"All places and all beings of the earth are sacred. It is dangerous to designate some places sacred when all are sacred. Such compromises imply that there is a hierarchy of value, with some places and some living beings not as important as others. No part of the earth is expendable; the earth is a whole that cannot be fragmented, as it has been by the destroyers’ mentality of the industrial age. The greedy destroyers of life and bringers of suffering demand that sacred land be sacrificed so that a few designated sacred places may survive; but once any part is deemed expendable, others can easily be redefined to fit the category of expendable. As Ruth Rudner points out in her article “Sacred Land,” what spiritual replenishment is possible if one must travel through ghastly fumes and ravaged lands to reach the little island or ocean or mountain that has been preserved by the label sacred land?"

– Derrick Jensen, Endgame 1

Come meet us!

For those that are interested, we will be the food vendor at the very first Richmond Drag Story Hour this coming Saturday. Here is the Facebook event: https://facebook.com/events/338878473719998

We are Part of the Earth

"The earth has Fates all her own. The earth has purpose. And we can only partially know what that purpose is. So I want to reverse our understanding and usage of that word, just like we need to reverse the notion of who is doing environmental work, or any of the other work on this planet. We think we’re doing it all. But the animals are doing the real work of holding it all together, and keeping us on our path. As are the plants. It’s as if we think the stars and sun and moon and the earth itself aren’t doing any work. It’s as if we think that all of nature is unintelligent except for us. Well, the earth has intelligence and purpose and fates all her own. And those are really the primary fates.

"This calls upon us to have tremendous responsibility: it is our responsibility to participate in those Fates. We’re part of the earth. It is up to us to be in alignment with those purposes, not to go against them, nor to sit back and pretend. You have to give back. You have to participate in those fates, because they are your Fates as well."

A garbage man saved 25,000 books and turned them into a library.

"Books are usually left separate from the rest of the rubbish, and if they're in good condition, Gutiérrez picks them up and takes them home.

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Go-to vaccine education list

10 myths and their refutations with sources.  Especially the "toxins" and "shedding" parts.

https://www.verywellhealth.com/anti-vaccine-myths-and-misinformation-2633730

Part of a larger play list, this is an excellent series on how immunity works. B cells and T cells are key to specific immunity, which is what vaccines trigger without the getting-sick part.  Memory T cells are 'experienced' after exposure and are why we have an effective response for years.
https://www.khanacademy.org/science/biology/human-biology/immunology/v/b-lymphocytes-b-cells

As for religious exemptions:
https://www.verywellfamily.com/religious-exemptions-to-vaccines-2633702

"You are not entitled to your opinion. You are entitled to your informed opinion. No one is entitled to be ignorant."
-- Harlan Ellison

Now you, too, can have an informed opinion on vaccines. Or, if you do not want to learn this (or any special topics), there's nothing wrong with deferring to experts, and nothing wrong with getting second opinions - from other experts.

Recycled Sari clothes "eco-fashion"

If your a fan of recycled fabric because of the huge environmental impact of making new fabric and clothes, and a fan of bargains too, this is my recommendation.

This is where I got my current skirts.  The run a 5 for the price of 2 sale often. That works out to about $28 per skirt. They do follow your instructions for what colors you prefer.  Took about 2 weeks to get them.  20% of the panels are not silk, but poly-rayon blend.  I'd say I got 3 all silk, and two with one silk & one poly-rayon panel.  They wash and wear much the same. You can wear them as tops or sundresses too.
https://www.darngoodyarn.com/products/sari-silk-wrap-skirts

They have a blog that explains the origins of their skirts and more.  They work with a co-op of 600 'suppressed' women to give them livable incomes. This has also saved 1 Million pound of silk sari's from being throw right into the landfills. This saved million of gallons of water that would have been used to make and dye new fabric. Their skirts are packaged by ARC in NY, a place much like Employment Solutions.  They also have scarves, and recycled sari yarn, and much more.  They run newsletter-only sales too.

I found similar options on Amazon.  They too work with a/the woman's co-op. I buy the largest size (58 - 60 inches of skirt, not including ties). There are smaller options too. These links are to the larger size.

One skirt, you get the pictured skirt.  https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B014D9498W/
They do update this page as they sell with new ones. Slow turnover, slow shipping. I bought one this way so I'll let you know how it is when I get it.

A three pack for $36, updated occasionally, $12 a skirt and you get what's pictured: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01M8IT53H/

5 random colored skirts for $45, that's less than $10 a skirt: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00P3AU1JM/

And last but not least, the pants. 5 pants for $33, and they have pockets! Random colors only. One size but it is pretty generous.  I found them to be well made.  I think I got 5 silk and one poly-rayon.

Notes from the Council: April Meeting

There were 4 blog posts in April.  Yarn is available for those that want if for the homeless hookers projects.

We now have 82 FB followers (the ads bought in new people).  Please continue to like and share the FB posts to increase visibility (and it counts toward volunteer hours).

Employment Solutions Garden:  Love and Tristan have a plan for the space. Some work has been done. If you want to volunteer to help, let us know. Formal plan still to review with the staff of Employment solutions before getting in too far.

Motion was passed to nominate Tristan Snyder as project manager for the ES Garden project.  Also, another motion was passed to create a $100 line-item budget for Employment Solutions Garden Project with money being used to be replaced by monies earned from the project, i.e. billable education and grants. All other monies earned over this budget amount earmarked to GSSC general fund.

NOTE: Please finish reporting volunteer hours for this past year at least 1 week (May 5th) before the May membership meeting to be counted. Tallies of hours will be used to make the membership roles. Current personal summaries can be requested from Jonathan.  Use thi s link to add: https://goo.gl/forms/6UC6os2jTLLI27w12

New Moon Circle Beltaine 2019 Invitation

New Moon Circle hosts
Beltaine 2019

May 4th, 4 PM [Star Wars Day]

1081 Willis Branch Road, Richmond, KY 40475 [Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Madison County]

All are welcome to join us!

Ritual, celebration, and potluck!

Please join us for our Beltaine celebration.  There will be a Star Wars themed ritual [May the 4th be with you] just for fun, Maypole dance with guitar and drums, fires to dance around, and paper plane activities.  We encourage guests to bring flow toys such as poi and hoops to dance with and also flashlights for a safe fire worm.

NMC participants are encouraged to bring some wood for our small fires.  Potluck will be light, summer fair. Please bring dish, side, beverage, dessert, or snack to share.  Dress casually or as your favorite Star Wars character. We will also be celebrating a special birthday!

Beltaine honours Life. It represents the peak of Spring and the beginning of Summer. Earth energies are at their strongest and most active. Beltaine is a Fire Festival. The word 'Beltaine' originates from the Celtic God 'Bel', meaning 'the bright one' and the Gaelic word 'teine' meaning fire. Together they make 'Bright Fire', or 'Goodly Fire' and traditionally bonfires were lit to honour the Sun and encourage the Sun's light to nurture the emerging future harvest and protect the community.

Please share this invitation with anyone you feel may be interested in attending.  Bright Blessings.

And an easy way to get volunteer hours!

Re: Fellowship this Sunday, Let's talk about Water!

My apologies.  Water will be later in the year. We will be having a workshop, loosely titled "The Easy Parts of Transformation".  Potluck before workshop begins and joys & concerns will be shared as part of the workshop itself (unless something needs to be shared beforehand).

Looking forward to seeing you all there.
