Happy Holidays from Garden Source Spiritual Center

We hope this message finds you all happy and warm and able to spend a little time with your loved ones.

For your holiday entertainment, I have attached a picture of one of Santa's minions, and here are two Cracked articles that you might find amusing:

Please keep yourself safe and I hope we get to meet at the first Garden Fellowship of the New Year... more on that soon.

Brightest Blessings.

UUFMC Carol Wining Event 2014

You are invited!  And I am so slow about getting the invites sent out... my apologies.
After battling an ear infection and whatever the kids have carried home from school, I am ready for some fun.
So, here is the .jpg invite. Basically, Friday night, 7 PM doors open, food and beverages provided, have a good time.
Much love and many hugs to you and yours this holiday season.

Tis the season

Posts have been low as germs are high. But faithful blog readers are never forgotten.

For your enjoyment, a picture of my family's Christmas/Yule tree. This same tree belonged to my grandparents before I was born, only the decorations have changed over the years. In fact, there is a picture from 1972 somewhere of a five-month-old me sitting under this very tree in a Santa sleeper, hat included.

That aside, if you would like to see the 2014 version of me, I do hope you can come out to Miss Sandra's Yule gathering on December 21st. Garden Source has decided to encourage attendance at Yule rather than compete with holiday happenings by having fellowship so close to the end of the year. And wait till you see what Sandra does for a tree!

If you need information or directions to Yule, please email GardenSourceSC@gmail.com. For obvious reasons, we cannot post a private address to our blog.

I promise to take all my antibiotics and do my best to be well enough to share hugs and joy for Yule. Hope to meet you there!

A great thanksgiving graphic

Just had to share.

Happy Thanksgiving

Hope you enjoy your time with family and friends.

I wanted to share this blurb from the Human Rights Campaign:

This year, we have so much to be grateful for...

We now have marriage equality in 35 states (and counting), an executive order that protects 14 million workers employed by federal contractors from anti-LGBT discrimination, and groundbreaking pro-equality work in the Deep South that is changing hearts and minds in one of the most difficult places to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT).

Speaking of prepping... Chocolate Crisis, anyone?

Now, I must stop this wandering thru the webs.  I read what I thought were some sensationalist yellow-journalism style articles declaring a cocoa crisis and chocolate shortages on the horizon... so I used my search tool (not the Big G, btw) to discover that there may be a bean of truth to this.

Find my search results here.  And the one article that actually seemed legit came from Confectionery News dot com, but was published in 2003.  One must wonder why the sudden upsurge in stories after 11 years without a blip.  I blame social media (yes, I am a pot and you are a kettle), ebola, and the fallacies of human nature.

Please, Powers That Be, don't let the Chocolate disappear!

The Ultimate Internet Glossary

Stumbled across this last night when I was wandering thru the intrawebs.

For those of us with a little internet savvy, this is amusing.  For folks with minimal to none on the internet knowledge scale, it is quite an education.  Plus, once I started reading and and following the embedded links, I could not stop... for many hours.

So, I just thought this would be an amusing thing to share.  Enjoy!

Are you prepping?

As the Community Coordinator of Garden Source Spiritual Center, one might believe that I am a bit more hip to current events and the like; however, quite the opposite is true.  I tend to avoid local news like the plague and national & international news are not even a blip on my proverbial radar.  But, being of the age of the internet, when the news is big enough, it will pass before my eyes unbidden.

I will not preach of how horrible the acts were that are going unpunished or the whys and what fors.  It is not for me to judge.  But there are more ticked-off people in the United States than I have been aware of in a very long time.  The website for the city of Cleveland, OH, is shut down while the FBI investigates that little bit of homegrown hacker terrorism.  And I fear that news out of Ferguson, MO, will not end quietly.

So, are you prepping?  Do you have adequate emergency water and food storage?  Know how to use a gun, bow, or other hunting/defense weapon?

What will you do if your malls, grocery stores, and government buildings are being rioted?  Or if in the midst of the the riot, a blizzard or other natural challenge blows in to add a little more crazy to the day?

Humor me for just a moment.  Take an assessment of what is around you.  Know who you can trust... (According to Fox Mulder, "no one.")

Let us hope, or pray if you will, that the world will take a collective breath and find some calm.  Until that happens...

Watch your 6.

----

Also, if you are interested in finding out more about prepping, come to any of our gatherings, many folks of the Garden are either active preppers or passive preppers (is that a real term?) and will be more than glad to answer your questions or just chat about what is on your mind.  We usually meet the Third Sunday of each month at 5 PM at the Plantory on W. Sixth St. in Lexington.  We will not be meeting in December, that is our time of Winter social and Yule party.  But, please, come out in January.  Until then, drop us a line at GardenSourceSC@gmail.com or check out our website GardenSourceSC.Org.

Thanksgiving Prayer

THANKSGIVING PRAYER
(Max Coots)
Let us give thanks for a bounty of people:

For children who are our second planting, and, though they grow like weeds and the wind too soon blows them away, may they forgive us our cultivation and fondly remember where their roots are.

For generous friends…with hearts as big as hubbards and smiles as bright as their blossoms;
For feisty friends as tart as apples;
For continuous friends, who, like scallions and cucumbers, keep reminding us we had them;
For crotchety friends, as sour as rhubarb and as indestructible;
For handsome friends, who are as gorgeous as eggplants and as elegant as a row of corn — and the others — as plain as potatoes, and so good for you.
For funny friends, who are as silly as brussels sprouts and as amusing as Jerusalem artichokes, and serious friends as complex as cauliflowers and as intricate as onions;
For friends as unpretentious as cabbages, as subtle as summer squash, as persistent as parsley, as delightful as dill, as endless as zucchini, and who — like parsnips — can be counted on to see you through the long winter;
For old friends, nodding like sunflowers in the evening-time, and young friends coming on as fast as radishes;
For loving friends, who wind around us like tendrils, and hold us despite our blights, wilts, and witherings;
And finally, for those friends now gone, like gardens past, that have been harvested — but who fed us in their times that we might have life thereafter;
For all these we give thanks.

Holidays are not about gifts, plus work for the future

So, I have decided to take advantage of this soapbox, er blog, to offer up an op-ed piece.  My opinions may not reflect the opinions of other members or friends of the Garden, and that is cool because diversity is what makes our Garden grow.

---

Holidays are not about gifts.

Thanksgiving is probably one of the more "pure" holidays, tho not celebrated outside of the USA (at least not at the same time with the same name nor for the same supposed reasons). Thanksgiving is about bringing family, friends, and community together for a celebratory meal and being thankful for just being alive and surrounded by love.  At least, that is my take on it.  I will not speak of Christopher Columbus and his atrocities nor of the fiction of Indians and Pilgrims.  Remember, most of history class was a not-so-thinly-veiled lie. Point being, Thanksgiving is for giving thanks and sharing love, and if your feast is just a cup of warmth and a cookie, so be it.

Hanukkah (your spelling may vary) is meant to be a reminder of a miracle.  Break it down to it's core...  time with loved-ones.

Kwanzaa (no idea if I spelled this correctly, my apologies) is, to my understanding, about cultural pride.  What is it really?  Time with loved-ones.

Yule is a reminder that the Sun will return and that we have not been forsaken to eternal Winter (a recurring miracle)....  and time with loved-ones.

Christmas is a reminder of another miracle (see a theme?) in the form of a sweet innocent baby (all of you theologians just shut up about Christmas and Yule being same holiday, that is a whole 'nother op-ed piece).  Again... time with loved-ones.

If I have missed your personal fall/winter holiday, my apologies, but I think most would agree that it comes down to time with loved-ones.

Every holiday meal or celebration that I attend, I have but one goal... HUGS!  Sure, the food, conversation, and maybe gifts are nice... and I love all the candles and sweet smells, but the human connection is the heart of it all and really all we need.

So, please, stop worrying about making sure you have just the perfect gift for everyone you love!  Let them know how important they are to you and give them a hug (unless they squirrel away from your invasion of their personal space, then just let them know how important they are to you).

The Beatles were not too far off with the lyrics, "all you need is love".

---

Now, as for my work for the future...  As many of you may be aware, I am one of those bleeding hearts (any doubts at this point?) who just want to make people feel a little better in the simplest ways possible, and I loosely devised (with the help of my proverbial partners in crime) a plan to reach out to the homeless in our community.  This is currently dubbed The Garden Homeless Project and is in its infancy (like the sweet baby Jesus).  The endgame is to be able to set up once, maybe twice, each year as we head into colder weather to distribute hats, gloves, scarves, coffee, cocoa, and sweets such as cookies to the homeless in downtown Lexington.  Phoenix Park would be a prime spot.

Of course, this is going to be a lot of work and a little bit of legalities.  I would like a bit of the "homemade" love to be in each piece we distribute, even if it isn't entirely homemade.  I have already begun collecting fleece and yarn to turn them into loving warmth.  We can really use donations to acquire more.  It is often better to purchase supplies of fabric goods for crafting because of the fear of bed bugs or lice, etc., than to widely accept the the fabrics themselves as the donation. A thought just occurred to me that tags attached to each piece with a nod to its creator and the project would be a nice personal touch.  (So much brainstorming still going on, you see.)

Nonetheless, if you would like to help out with ideas, time, skills, cash, or cheerleading, please let me know.  I can be reached thru our main email: GardenSourceSC@gmail.com. Just put "homeless" somewhere in the subject line.  Paypal donations can also be sent to that same email with a note that it is for the homeless project (otherwise it will be placed in our main coffers).

This idea is, as many are, just a band-aid on a much larger problem.  I have no delusions about that.  But I intend to work throughout the year so that next holiday season we can share some face-to-face with people who need a smile and a hug during one of the hardest times of their lives.  I have been homeless, tho only briefly in the greater scheme, and I want to give hope and love because I know what I have to be thankful for now.

---

"For now we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully as I am fully known. Now these three remain: faith, hope, and love.  But the greatest of these is love."  ~I Corinthians 13:12-13~ (from the Holman Christian Standard Bible)

Eine kleine Nachtmusik

It is cold and late, and I just enjoyed one of my favorite supernatural primetime soap operas (yes, alas, some of us are still a bit addicted to the old boob-tube, even if we partake of our entertainment via the new boob-tube).  And tho, I am not a huge fan of bands doing covers of songs that meant so much to me in my youth and young adulthood, what I heard tonight gave me chills and I felt it paid proper homage to the original.

So, without further adieu, this is not Mozart's serenade, but I think Michael Hutchence* would approve:

*November 22nd will mark the 17th anniversary of his passing.

We just got the artwork for our new logo... here is one example:

Forget Facebook, Abandon Instagram, Move To A Village

Check out this article on the Goats and Soda NPR blog, I think many of us in the Garden will enjoy discovering that we are not alone in wanting to create a Village feeling in our community.

Upcoming Garden and related Events

Hi Gang!  Sorry for my silence, just been such a time over the last few months.  Tonight, and moving forward, I'm playing catch-up and trying to stay motivated to my commitments of Circle, Choir, Garden, and Family.  Sometimes I wonder how others balance all these things and full time jobs. For those of you who do, I applaud you and hope you can find time for a nap or at least a relaxing mindful meditation.

Ok, on to my list (oh, so many lists) of Garden and related events:

Next Sunday, November 16 - Council Meeting at 3 PM, Fellowship and Potluck at 5 PM at the Plantory, 501 West Sixth Street, Suite 250, Lexington, KY. Topic: "How Permaculture Can Save Humanity and the Earth, but Not Civilization".  Love will be sharing a video with us as we potluck together and can have discussion after.

Many of us will be attending Sandra's Yule celebration in lieu of  a Council Meeting and Fellowship in December (she will also be hosting Thanksgiving).  If you are not on our yahoogroup and would like to receive more information about these events, please contact us directly at GardenSourceSC@gmail.com.  These events are not sponsored by the Garden and are held in a private home, so you can understand our need to be cautious with posting specific info on the blog...

Sometime in December we will be launching our Garden Homeless Project.  This will be on the agenda for this Sunday's Council Meeting and I will post more info soon.  Just keep warm thoughts that we can launch this successfully and it will be an ongoing service project for the foreseeable future.

Friday, December 19, the choir I am a part of "The U-Notes" will be hosting our 2nd Annual Carol-Wining, starting at 7:30 PM.  This is a night of carols, wine, snacks, and socializing in an effort to celebrate the diversity of Winter Holiday season while raising a little dinero for our music program... that sheet music sure isn't free.  :-)  This will be at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Madison County, Willis Branch Road, Richmond, KY.

Our first Council Meeting and Fellowship of the new year will be Sunday, January 18 at the Plantory.  We plan to celebrate a few birthdays during our potluck time.

I hope to see some smiling faces at these events.  Bright Blessings until we meet again (or for the first time!).

Alaska may be next domino to fall...

A judges ruling on October 13, 2014, has set Alaska on a course toward legalizing same-sex marriage.  Many of us may recall that Alaska was the first state to place a same-sex marriage ban into their state constitution back in 1998.

The current list of states to allow same-sex matrimony now includes:
California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington state and Wisconsin, plus the District of Columbia.

Eight states are on the cusp:
Alaska, Arizona, Kansas, North Carolina, Montana, South Carolina, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Hope you all had a wonderful Solstice

All of the events this week had me puzzled.  And in my puzzlement, I made today, the 22nd, the Summer Solstice.  Not off by much, but...
bad Pagan, I am.

Nonetheless, I hope each of you had a good one.  I attended a memorial for one of my UU elders.  It was lovely, and crowded.  People just stood up from their seats and shared thoughts and memories.  I kept mine to myself at that time, but will share it here, as I'm sure it will bring a smile to some.

When I think of Bob Stebbins, I remember the day I attended fellowship right after getting my Mother's Day pedicure.  I was sporting new sandals and sparkly, colored toe nails.  Bob apparently took notice.  After service, he asked if I had read the story of the siren who seduced by wiggling her toes.  No, I still haven't read that story and now I really want to, but I don't know the name or the author.  It was just the funniest conversation I could think of having right after fellowship, but truth is stranger than fiction.  Bob was an expert at making people smile.

Anyway, back to Summer Solstice, I wanted to share a great quote from True Blood, season 1, episode 3, as spoken by the character of Bill Compton:

"You think that it's not magic that keeps you alive? Just because you understand the mechanics of how something works, doesn't make it any less of a miracle. Which is just another word for magic. We're all kept alive by magic, Sookie. My magic's just a little different from yours, that's all."

All of us have our own different magic.  And isn't that just grand?!  Some of us even have our magic a day late.  *smile*

We are finally official!

Greetings All,

I am proud to announce that all the hard work of the last three years to develop bylaws and articles of incorporation have finally come to fruition. On June 15th, 2014, the Membership adopted both the Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation at our annual membership meeting.

Yesterday, June 18th, 2014, I visited the Office of the Secretary of State for the Commonwealth of Kentucky where I filed our Articles of Incorporation. Within ten minutes our articles were accepted and assigned the Organization Number 0890160, which means we are officially accepted, in good standing, as a Nonprofit Corporation. Our official name is Garden Source Spiritual Center Inc. (the Inc is required by Kentucky law). You can download and view both documents on our website under Legal or you can follow this link.

Congratulations to you all.

GSSC General Membership Meeting

Garden Source Spiritual Center will have its Annual Membership Meeting on Sunday, June 15, 2014, at 2:30 PM.  Our location will be at the Plantory, 560 East Third Street, Lexington.

We would like as many members as possible to be present as we will be voting to approve the proposed Bylaws and the Articles of Incorporation to move forward in our steps to becoming a 501c3 Non-Profit Organization.  If you cannot be present, you can give someone your written proxy.  We would like to have the input of as many members as possible because of the depth of importance these documents hold.

In order to achieve a quorum, we need 14 members present in body or proxy to make the vote happen. If you are unable to be at the meeting in body, please give your written proxy to a member that you know is attending.

Please respond to this message (or email me directly) if you need a proxy person, but are not sure who to reach out to or how to contact them.

This will also be a potluck, so bring a dish to share if you are able!

Hoping this finds you all well.

Sustainability High needs supporters

Wandering thru the internet, I found this.  Clay County High School is next door to my home town and I'm so proud of them for this undertaking.

Sustainability High is a student-led initiative to make CCHS 100% self-sustainable, and document it.  Once the school is 100% sustainable, the money saved will then go to the community to help fund renewable energy sources and sustainable food sources.

I don't think I have ever witnessed such a worthy cause so close to home.  I'll be sharing what I can and hope you will to.

Learn more here:

And please pass this info along to anyone you think might want to help make a difference.

The End Result:

A breathtaking documentary, following one school, in the heart of coal country, as it becomes self-sustainable, that will be distributed digitally for FREE to our backers.

A paradigm shift in the way Kentucky views renewable energy.

Stamp Out Hunger food drive - May 10, 2014

National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
On May 10, 2014, letter carriers across the country will be collecting food for families in need.

Free Trees - Happy Earth Day!

Trees (Bald Cypress & Red Bud) are being given away by the Forest Service at the Berea Farmers Market today, Tuesday 4/22/14 starting at 3 p.m. until they are gone. The market meets from 3-6 p.m. on the lawn of the Berea College Farm Store (311 S. Main between Ellipse and Chestnut one block down the hill from the college square).

Free Redbud trees also available at KU in Richmond (Water Street) today.  I got mine about a hour ago and they still have tons.  Each person gets two trees, they even gave trees to my toddler.  So, please take advantage of this free opportunity to celebrate Earth Day!

The Walking Site

I know in recent conversations the idea of walking 10,000 steps each day reared its ugly head.  By chance I came across this website that helps explain a reasonable way to work up to 10,000.  It also has other walking/fitness info that may be of interest.
Check out The Walking Site and be sure to come by the Plantory tomorrow for some food and socializing at 5 PM.
Be Well and Happy Easter!

Brushy Fork Institute

The Flex-E-Grant (FEG) Program, designed by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), provides small investments in short-term projects that build community capacity to mobilize local resources, gain leadership experience, and strengthen community institutions and networks.  Brushy Fork has administered a portion of the KY ARC Flex-E-Grant program since 2008.  Working in collaboration with ARC and the Kentucky Department for Local Government, Brushy Fork has administered more than $1.2 million in program funds across 28 of Kentucky's distressed Appalachian axounties.  By the end of 2013, this investment will total more than $1.5 million.  From 2008 - 2013 the average grant awart totaled $7,593.

Grow Appalachia

Grow Appalachia emphasizes food production in order to introduce as much no-cost, fresh, healthy food as possible to the region.  the basic goal is to help as many families grow as much of their own food as possible.  last year, Grow Appalachia worked with over 25 partner sites in 39 counties with more than 1500 families and 50 community gardens.  We were fortunate to feed 19,500 people growing over 1,151,000 pounds of food.  We facilitated 100 hobs in Appalachia and our participants sold more than $54,000 in produce.

The Alliance for Appalachia

We are a regional alliance with the following goals:

2.  putting a halt to destructive coal technologies, and
3.  creating a sustainable, just Appalachia.

Central Appalachian Network

CAN and our member organizations are leading the charge in transforming Central Appalachia's economy by creating economic opportunities that are environmentally sustainable, building on our social and natural capital, and meeting the needs of our region's people.

The Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation

The Claude Worthington Benedum foundation is a regional philanthropy focusing on West Virginia and Southwestern Pennsylvania.  The Foundation generally invests two-thirds of its grant dollars in West Virginia and one-third in Southwestern Pennsylvania.  The foundation makes grants in two program areas that span both states:  Education and Economic Development.  In addition, the Foundation supports Community Development and Health & Human Services grants programs in West Virginia, and in Southwestern Pennsylvania supports the major performing arts organizations within the Cultural District.

Council of West Virginia Churches

The West Virginia Council of Churches makes more visible the unity of Christ's church, provides a Christian witness on public issues, and engages in cooperative mission and service for all West Virginians.  Respecting the traditions of denomination - while uniting to speak with one voice and to act with united hands - we carry the message of Christ's church into the public arena.  Over the years, the West Virginia Council of churches has been active in areas of social justice, health and economic issues, legislative issues and disaster response.

The Appalachian Community Fund

The Appalachian Community Fund (ACF) is a publicly supported, non-profit grantmaking organization that provides resources and support to grassroots organizations working to overcome the underlying causes of poverty and injustice in Central Appalachia (East Tennessee, Eastern Kentucky, Southwest Virginia and West Virginia).  We pool resources form a range of sources including individuals, businesses, and foundations to support community-led efforts and movement for social change, to support the training and leadership development necessary to strengthen the work in our region, and to cultivate the conditions for lasting, long-term change to be possible.

---

Partnership of African American Churches (PAAC-WV)

While PAAC serves all communities, it intentionally targets African American communities in West Virginia.  The PAAC is a specific initiative driven organization focusing on community and individual well-being which involves both policy change and programmatic implementation.  The vision of the Partnership of African American Churches (PAAC) is to be an agent of empowerment as it relates to positive community change.  However, the vision that ultimately counts is not the essential vision of external forces but rather the vision that a community has for itself.  It is this self-determined vision that communities are willing to support and makes the necessary sacrifices to accomplish.  Nonetheless, experience has demonstrated that communities always need help in processing their visions into reality.

---

Central Appalachian Regional Network

The Central Appalachia Regional Network (CARN) connects diverse organizations to promote policy and action to improve the quality of life available to the people of Appalachia.  The Central Appalachia Regional Network (CARN) envisions healthy and thriving communities throughout the region.  These empowered communities engage civic, public, and private institutions to create change, and ensure a just existence for all Appalachian residents.

FAHE (Federation of Appalachian Housing Enterprises)

The service we provide is not a handout, but a helping hand that allows families in need a chance to obtain home ownership.  We offer this assistance in many ways, including providing affordable, low-interest loans.  These loans allow families to experience vast improvements in life such as heat in the winter, running water, and access to proper sanitation, which are not easy to come by in many rural Appalachian communities.  Fahe does not do this alone.  Our major strength is that we partner with 46 (and growing) non-profits across Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Virginia to form a powerful network that brings about real change.  Fahe does not sit in the center of the network.  We are available as a resource to the Members and we help to sponsor events, such as our quarterly caucus meetings, but this is a supporting role.  The Fahe Network can be thought of as a web.  There are several lines of communication going from one organization to another.  Over time, all the organizations, including Fahe, have access to one another.  No one is acting as a middleman.  This leads to strong communication and strong collaboration across the network.  We trust and we depend on each other.

I hope you all find these links helpful, inspiring, and eye-opening.  Let me know what you think. Peace.

P.S.
Doesn't this sound a little bit like our Garden:
"can be thought of as a web [hub].  There are several lines of communication going from one organization to another.  Over time, all the organizations, including [Garden Source], have access to one another.  No one is acting as a middleman.  This leads to strong communication and strong collaboration across the network.  We trust and we depend on each other."
Took the words right out of our collective mouth.
